Best Make Up Oscar Winners - Richard Baker Profile
I always believed that winning an Oscar led to fame and fortune, red carpets, film offers and a house in the Hollywood Hills. Well if you bag one of the top Oscars it might well do but Richard A Baker has won a total of six, yes that's six academy awards but he is not a household name. The simple reason behind this is that Baker's six awards are for best make up at the Oscars. I am not even sure if I have even seen the best make-up Oscar handed out, its one of those where they tend to cut to the ad break. The first two Oscar's awarded for make up were honorary ones. William Tuttle received the very first Best Make-up Oscar in 1964 for 7 Faces of Dr Lao, in which Tony Randall played the 7 difference faces of the title. Four years later in 1968 John Chambers received an honorary Oscar for the outstanding make up achievements for Planet of The Apes. It wasn't until 1981 that Best Make Up became a permanent fixture at the Oscars. Richard Baker bagged the first of the regular Oscar's for his work on American Werewolf in London. He has gone on to dominate the field since. Baker has been nominated a total of 10 times and taken the Oscar home on 8 of those occasions. Richard Baker's Oscar wins 1981 - American Werewolf in London 1987 - Harry and The Hendersons 1994 - Ed Wood 1996 - The Nutty Professor 1997 - Men in Black 2000 - How The Grinch Stole Christmas Not far behind Baker in terms of overall nominations are Greg Cannom and Ve Neil both have 8 nominations a piece. Ve Neil has three wins and Cannom two. Richard Baker started his career as a make up artist as an understand to the great Dick Smith. His experience at the right hand side of Smith was the perfect hands on make up school, it allowed him to develop the skills that what serve him so well in future years. The Oscar for American Werewolf in London resulted in him transforming Michael Jackson into a werewolf in the famous Thriller video. His versatile make up skills transferred to the TV screen where his work on Beauty and The Beast won him a new host of admirers. His more recent film work includes Hellboy and the X-Men, Norbit and the soon to be released werewolf film, The Wolfman. Come Oscar night 2009 if Richard Baker is on the list it's worth a bet that he will be walking off with another Oscar. |
