Five Money Saving Tips for Students
By Antony Heywood
Five Money Saving Tips for Students? Are you about to embark on your university course? Will you be living away from home for the first time and managing your own budget? I have listed five ways in which you can save money whilst studying for your lucrative future employment. With levels of student debt fast approaching £4,500 a year it is worth trying to saving money where you can. With the cost of fuel, food and heating all on the rise it is important to find ways to minimise your out goings whilst still enjoy student life to the full. These are my top five tips for saving money as a student. Learn to Cook This may seem like a stupid idea but you be amazed by the amount of people who cannot cook when they get to University. One lad I shared halls with in the first year couldn’t fry and egg or cook baked beans! His family owed a hotel and he had always been cooked for by either his parents or by the chef! Basic cooking is simple to master, just follow the instructions, you’re bright enough to get to University, really it’s not that hard. You will save a small fortune if you master a few basic dishes. If you can cook a good Sheppard pie, spaghetti Bolognese, curry, home made pizza, pasta bake, omelettes, risotto and a good old roast dinner then you will be half way there. Get someone who has a good mastery of the basics to show you how to whip up these staples dishes. With a little practice you will master it, its not rocket science. You will save cash on ready meals, eat healthy and impress you fellow students with your mature approach to living away from home. Go to the Library or Buy Second Hand Books One of the first things you should do when you get to University is get your library card. Yes, before you get drunk and kiss someone or something you regret get in the cue for your library card. You will need to do a fair amount of reading during the length of your degree. You will get a reading list. Unlike school you won’t be given the text books. Take your reading list in hand and scale the huge shelves in the library to get the majority of books that you require. Even in these days where you have to pay fees there won’t be enough books to go round. Get in early to avoid having to buy them. If you miss the boat in the library then buy them second hand. Most Universities will have a second hand book shop that sells old text books, a notice board (either the real thing or an electronic one) or you can shop using amazon or ebay. Their really is no point in buying new text books. Just make sure you are quick off the mark or they will all be gone. Switch to pay as you go mobile phone If you are on a contract with your mobile then get out of it and switch to pay as you go. The calls might be slightly higher but you will be able to control your spending much easier, do you really need a £30 contract when all you do is send a few texts every month? You won’t be confronted with a huge bill at the end of the month; you can budget so much easier. Install Voip on your PC For those long haul calls to family and friends get some sort of free voip installed on your computer. It’s free to use and with a cheap webcam so much more fun. You can see your boyfriend or girlfriend that you left behind and not just hear them. Best to hide those love bites though! Get A Part Time Job Not a way to save money I know but a great way to keep yourself afloat financially. Get yourself a bar job, work in the library, wait on tables, become a cinema usher it doesn’t really matter. Don’t commit yourself to too many hours or it may have a negative effect your studies. A by product will be to prove to your parents how grown up you have become and that you are taking the cost of going to university seriously. You will also met people outside of the university crowd and this will help you understand the city you live in a little better. Employers also like to see a work history on graduates CV’s. Hope the tips are useful. Enjoy your studies and watch those pennies. Tony Heywood ©
